To protect the next generation, and to ensure a healthy legacy for Glasgow, I am calling on the Organising Committee to make Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games tobacco-free.The Scottish Government has just announced a goal of making our next generation free from tobacco. We know that young people’s smoking choices are influenced by role models and the perception of smoking as a normal activity – and this makes the Commonwealth Games the first real test of that vision for Scotland. An event celebrating healthy achievement and providing positive role models for our young people should support people to stop smoking, not help them to light up.I support the principles of the Smoke Free Sports Charter, including the vision of "All children and young people to be smoke free and participate in physical activity and sport in a smoke free environment" and call on you to reflect these principles in the organisation of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games. The international community will be watching to see what kind of Commonwealth Games Scotland will organise. You can ensure that Glasgow and Scotland lead the way with a tobacco-free Games – by enforcing existing legislation against the promotion or advertising of tobacco, by ensuring all Games venues and grounds (indoor and outdoor) are smoke-free and confirming that no tobacco is sold at any Games venues.I would be grateful if you would respond indicating the action you will take.
